Careers

Careers advice has a high profile at King's and its importance is clear, especially in the later stages of our pupils' school lives. Pupils have access to well stocked careers libraries which include literature and computer software on how to choose suitable GCSEs and A Levels, how to research potential careers and university prospectuses. Pupils are also able to make appointments with the Careers Officer if they want to talk over any queries.

We start Careers advice as early as Year 7 via the PSHE programme, building up the provision each year. During Year 10, all students take part in a week of Work Experience which is extremely popular with the pupils. This year we have students who have undertaken placements at Astra Zeneca, a local veterinary surgery, a nursery and a solicitors. Students will be writing about their experiences which you will be able to read in the Careers section of the website in the 'Work Experience' blog. During Year 11 we focus on each pupil individually, using a personal interview to help them with their plans for Sixth Form and AS subject choices.

Sixth Form students benefit from a full careers timetable which includes lunch time presentations on a wide range of topics to broaden their thinking beyond A Level study. Tutorial sessions provide advice on how to research university courses, write effective personal statements and use the UCAS Application system. Special provision is made for students who require interview preparation. For example, we arrange for current solicitors, vets, doctors, etc. to provide interview training for pupils.

Students wishing to apply to Oxbridge are invited to attend our 'Aspire' programme of weekly sessions to help them prepare for the demanding application and interview process. This programme offers students the chance to research their chosen subject beyond the A Level curriculum and present their findings to their peers and senior staff. Students are also given advice on how to prepare for challenging interview questions and how to respond intelligently and thoughtfully.
